You'll find here information related to the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research, its structure, how it works and the activities that are carried out there..
The origin of the I.V.I.A goes back to the first School-Farm of Agriculture of Valencia, created in 1881, and to the Station of Plant Pathology (1924) and the Orange Station at Burjassot (1931). These Stations, together with that of Horticulture at Benicalap, and the Rice Station at Sueca, made up in 1970 the CRIDA 07, and later in 1984 the present Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research.
The I.V.I.A. is an Autonomous Institution of the Regional Government, assigned to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority, created in 1991 by the Law 4/1991 of the Regional Government of Valencia.
Its aims are to stimulate scientific research and technological development in the agro-food sector of Valencia.

The initial background of the present I.V.I.A., goes back to 1868. In this year, the Provincial Garden for Acclimation was established on the grounds of the ancient Royal Palace of Valencia, now known as the Viveros, which up until then had been property of the Crown. There, in 1871, the Provincial School of Agriculture was created, and later, on the 4th of March 1881 was open what we could define as the first centre destined for the study of agricultural research, the Model Farm, or Practice School-Farm for Agriculture of Valencia.
Until 1892 the Farm site continued to be the Royal
Gardens of the City of Valencia, but on the 23rd of February of
that year, the State transferred the lands to the County Council,
and the Farm was then established in large agricultural lands
in Burjassot.
After being built in Burjassot, the Farm was consolidated as agricultural
centre, and other specialised Stations on various subjects were
created, which were the predecessors of the present Departments
of the I.V.I.A. Hence, the Plant Pathology Station was open on
the 20th June of 1924. Later, on the 4th of December of 1931,
the Orange Station of Levante was constituted. In addition to
the Burjassot Station, those of Castellón, Alzira, Alicante
and Murcia were also established.
Independent of the Burjassot Farm, on the 7th February of 1913,
the Rice Farm of Sueca was created, which was there definitely
established, and adopted the name of Rice Station of Sueca in
1932.
On the 10th February, 1940, the National Institute for Agronomical
Research was organized at State level, and the Regional Centre
of the Júcar and Turia Basins were integrated in the above
mentioned Stations, together with that of Horticulture, of new
creation, and sited at Benicalap.
Later on, the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA)
was structured into several agronomic regions on the 28th October,
1971. The 7th of them, named as Levante, included the Valencian
Country and Murcia, under the name of Regional Centre for Research
and Agricultural Development of Levante (CRIDA 07) that grouped
nearly all the Valencian and Murcian Stations for agricultural
research.
In 1976 the Burjassot and Benicalap centres of the CRIDA 07 were
moved to the new site at Moncada, which was inaugurated on the
1st December, 1976.
On the 10th of April of 1984 the Valencian part of the CRIDA 07
was transferred to the Regional Government of Valencia, thus being
created the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA).
On the 13th March, 1991, the IVIA became an Autonomous Organism
of the Valencia Regional Government, assigned to the Agriculture
and Fisheries Authority.

The IVIA transfers the results of research of practical application to the sector. Amongst the transfers of major interest for the agricultural sector, there are new rice and strawberry varieties, selected virus free citrus rootstoks, virus free, local stone fruit varieties, computerized programmes of fertilization and fertirrigation of citrus, cultural practices, recommendation and control methods and detection of various pests and diseases and technology for fruit conservation.
This transfer is made directly by the researchers or through the Office for Transfer of Results of Investigation (OTRI). The OTRI of the IVIA, in addition, co-operates with the Service for Transfer of Agriculture Technology (STAT) of the Authority of Agricultural, Fisheries and Food.
