CENTER
DESCRIPTION

The major aim of the Centro de
Genómica at the IVIA is to generate the theoretical and practical knowledge
necessary to optimize the culture, the production and the quality of two species
of great agronomical interest in the Comunidad Valenciana, such us citrus and
rice. The Center is developing the following research areas:
Genomics
The purpose of genomics is
double, on one hand, to determine the genome structure, on the other, to unravel
the function of the genes. The knowledge of the genomic sequence and the
functional analysis of the genes, will provide the
bases for a fast progress in diverse areas of the basic and applied plant
research. An objective of maximum transcendence in this area is related to the
participation in the international effort to sequence the citrus genome.
Biology of development
The study of the biological
mechanisms regulating vegetative as well as reproductive growth,
is essential to understand the functioning of vegetal systems and to improve
their performance.
Physiology and metabolism
The objective to be developed in
this area of research is focused in the characterization and study, at the
organ and plant level, of the fundamental and characteristic processes of
plants.
New varieties
This research area intends,
through the knowledge generated in other areas and the use of physical and
biological technologies, to obtain selections with novel characteristics of
agronomic and scientific interest.
