Rice
The nature of the Rice Department role is similar to that performed by
an improvement center. The varieties most commonly grown in the Valencian
Autonomy have been obtained here. Their agronomic value is studied, as
well as the industry profits and cooking quality are evaluated.. It also
develops other research matters related to the rice culture, advising in
problems posed to the sector, in various topics, mainly diseases and weeds.
-
Variety improvement
-
The most important objectives are the production of long grain, B, varieties,
that comply with the quality standards from the E.U., and the production
of medium grain varieties, resistant to lodging and with a satisfactory
yield. Foreign varieties are studied, and the varities obtained are conserved.
-
Cultural practices
-
The biological fixation of N2 is studied as a supplement to nitrogen fertilizer,
enhancing through a number of methods the presence of native cyanobacteria.
The nitrogen balance in the ricefield is also studied, as well as the improvement
of the fertilization efficiency. One of the aims of these studies is the
reduction of environmental pollution.
