The CEBAS is an institute located in Murcia (South East Spain), 50 Km from Mediterranean coast, under semiarid climatic conditions. It was created in 1958, with the aim of promoting research in the fields of Agriculture Science, Natural Resources and Environmental Science.

Up today, the CEBAS is arranged in five departments:
  • Nutrition and plant physiology
  • Plant breeding and phatology
  • Food science and technology
  • Soils and Water Conservation
  • Organic Refuse Management

There are 146 persons working at the Centre nowadays, 44 of which are scientists, 11 technicals, 7 postdocs, 26 postgraduate students, 39 technicians and 19 administratives.

The composition of the CEBAS-CSIC group working in Soil Enzimology, integrated in the departments of Soil and Water Conservation and Organic Refuses Management, is as follows:

In the last years, the main lines of research of this group have been:
  • Biostabilization process of the organic wastes
  • Use of biochemical parameters as biomarkers of the composting process
  • Studies of influence of composts on soil quality and plants
  • Effect of heavy metals on soil enzyme activities
  • Strategies for soil rehabilitation: organic soil amendment
  • Microbial activity as potential biomarker of soil degradation and desertification
  • Soil Bioremediation
In the last ten years, the CEBAS Group has developed more than twenty projects, funded by national and international organisms (CYCIT, FAO, UE…), and has established and sustained wide relationships with European research groups.
